Here’s What I’m All About

Welcome my friend. I’m Brad Allen and I’m a professional drummer based out of Kansas City, MO. I spent several years as a drummer in the U.S. Army Band before settling into the Kansas City music scene.

Have you ever asked yourself:

  • How can I learn to play as fast as some of my favorite drummers?
  • How can I create exciting and interesting drum solos?
  • How can I learn to create and play great drum beats and grooves?
  • How can I develop more control and speed with my bass drum?

If so, then you’ve come to the right place! Whether you’re a beginning drummer, or a player who wants to advance your skills, I can help you.

I’ve spent over 20 years teaching, studying and performing on the drums. Brad Allen Drums was started as a way of passing my drumming knowledge along to others. I have found and refined numerous drum techniques and methods over the years that are effective and practical – methods that enable a drummer to be able to function in a band as quickly as possible. How to master coordination on the drum-set, play break-neck tempos, and more. These are designed to accelerate your growth as a drummer and help you to play your best in the shortest amount of time possible. I wanted to help other drummers save time – hours or perhaps years of practicing by distilling all my experience down to simple and effective drum practicing  techniques and methods.

Proof That These Drum Techniques And Methods Work

I started drumming at about age 12. By the time I was a junior in high school I was practicing the drums constantly. My band director encouraged me to try out for some state honor bands. I did try out, but I didn’t make the bands that year. Though I had lots of ambition, I was lacking some important information about drumstick technique, and practicing the drums in general.

Then I met Dave Divis. Dave was studying with Joe Morello at the time. Morello was like a drumming guru. (Think Yoda from Star Wars!) Professional drummers came from all over the world to study with Joe including Max Weinberg(Bruce Springsteen), Jon Fishman(Phish), and Danny Gottlieb(Pat Metheny). Morello had performed with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, one of the most famous and commercially successful jazz groups in history. Not only was he an amazing drum soloist, he was also a virtual genius when it came to drumstick technique and teaching students how to play.

Dave started teaching me the same stick techniques and practicing methods he was learning from Joe Morello. My senior year I auditioned for the honor bands again. I wiped the floor with my competitors! I took 1st chair in both honor bands I auditioned for, winning over 70 other drummers in each audition. Obviously the techniques Dave taught me worked.

Student Results

My students have had similar results. One of my students, Matthew Lam, won a “Fastest Hands” drumming contest 2 years in a row. Another student, Zach Forsyth achieved 1st chair in the Kansas All State Band just like I did and later went on to have a career as a professional jazz drummer. Joel McCoy became a professional drummer in Nashville. And yet another student of mine, Kevin Walters, became the first student in the history of the University Of Kansas to make the snare drum line as a freshman.
