Max Roach Brush Solo

It took me a long time to really appreciate Max Roach. Early in my drumming development, I was a Buddy Rich fanatic. I still love Buddy Rich. He was amazingly fast and powerful, as well as musical.

Max Roach was much different. Max, although not as fast as Buddy, thought more like a horn player. In other words, if you sat a trumpet player down at the drums, he would probably play melodies, not the typical things most drummers would play.

Max was a composer. You can hear it in his solos. They have a form, or a direction to them just like a musical composition. He was one of the drummers that made me want to write music as well as play the drums. In addition, Max Roach led his own bands, which again, he inspired me to do as well.

I was fortunate enough to get to see him play live in St. Louis quite a few years ago. I went with some other friends of mine who were also drummers in the U.S. Army Band. Max did a 2 hour clinic/performance, in which he performed as well as talked about his experiences performing with jazz greats like Charlie Parker. It was truly an awe inspiring, once in a lifetime experience.
